Proudly with you, for you since 1981

Many things have changed at Myhorizon over the years, but our passion and commitment to delivering empowering, quality service endures.

Our organisational milestones:
.
.

1981

Myhorizon is formed in Redland City by a group of parents of children with disability who are united by a common purpose – creating a better life for people with disability through education, employment, and community connection opportunities.

1983

Myhorizon’s first activity therapy centre opens in Capalaba with the support of Commonwealth Government funding. Permanent staff are recruited to develop suitable programs, but the centre soon transforms into an adult training centre to meet changing community needs.

1986

The Capalaba site expands due to increasing community demand and becomes the headquarters of Myhorizon. Various new service arms are established including Independent Living, Social Enterprises, and Respite Programs.

1987

Myhorizon’s social enterprises are successful enough for an additional premise to be leased.

1988

The new Disability Services Act comes into effect and Myhorizon introduces new services and revises existing ones, emphasising programs that meet individual needs. Funds raised in the community through art unions, and sales of art and crafts to support Myhorizon’s mission are invested in building a new activity centre.

1990

A new day activity centre opens for service.

1998

A purpose-built facility on Sussex Street at Alexandra Hills is opened by the Minister for Disability.

2000-06

Myhorizon expands its service offering to include Lifestyle, and Employment & Training options. HBE, a new social enterprise employing around 33 people with disability, is also established.

2007

Myhorizon wins a prestigious Australia Day Award recognising its strong contribution to the community sector.

2010

Myhorizon becomes the only not-for-profit organisation to make it into BRW Magazine’s Best 50 Places to Work 2010 Index.

2011

Myhorizon celebrates its 30th anniversary of creating uplifted, connected communities in South East Queensland.

2015

Myhorizon secures support from Redland City Council to build a new community and education centre on Council land on Runnymede Road, adjacent the popular Indigiscapes Centre.

The project enables us to expand our Employment and Training, Support Coordination, Independent Living, Social Enterprises, and Corporate services in readiness for the arrival of the NDIS.

The Ian McDougall Trust provides a generous donation of $450,000 which enables us to incorporate a purpose-built early childhood intervention centre into the project.
Public spaces and catering facilities are also included in the plan, enabling the new centre to be used as a venue for conferences, events, and weddings.

2016
The first sod is turned at the site of Myhorizon’s new Capalaba centre and construction work commences. New Lifestyle sites also open at Wynnum North, Ashmore, and Ormeau.

2017

Myhorizon opens the new Capalaba Centre, and continues to focus on service innovation. We are looking forward to continuing to deliver on our mission to uplift individual lives by creating connected communities when the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) rolls out in South East Queensland in July 2018.

2018

Myhorizon again wins a prestigious Australia Day Award recognising its strong contribution to the community sector. Myhorizon also continue their work to support clients and families through the extensive application process and roll out of The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from July 2018 – the largest social reform in Australia in decades.
